How does it feel to suffer from a chronic disease? Let me tell you my story of chronic disease and how it has shaped my life. My first-hand experience with the fear and challenges of rheumatoid arthritis can help you relate to your or someone else’s struggle. Let me provide insight on the approach I took in order to live a healthier, happier, and more fulfilled life. Approaches that everyone should use. I understand the challenges, the fear, and the hopelessness that many of you face and I have overcome it all and want the same for you.

Eating the correct amount and types food and exercising to maintain a healthy weight is imperative when it comes to thriving with a chronic disease. Remember that healthy lifestyle change is one of the hardest things for a person to achieve and sustain. People naturally resist this change because so much time and energy were used to develop unhealthy habits and even more must be invested to break long held habits such as overeating, eating foods high in calories, and being inactive. It’s time we take action and make our health a top priority.

What does healthy eating consist of? It starts with knowing our body composition, or amount of lean and fat body mass. We use calculations such as body mass index or BMI to determine our body composition and whether or not we are overweight or obese. Healthy eating also consists of knowing the correct amount and types of food we should eat. We use another calculation called basal metabolic rate or BMR to determine the daily number of calories we require along with the daily number of calories needed to lose weight. A great and easy to use calculator to measure your BMI and BMR can be found at www.kairwell.com/calculators. We can determine the types of foods we should eat by calculating our macros or macronutrients. Macros are used to estimate the amount of carbohydrates, protein, and fats we should consume.

Food and exercise logs should be used to track our healthy eating and exercise and can be supplemented by other weight loss adjuncts depending on the degree of obesity. These adjuncts include weight loss pills that work to burn fat, suppress the appetite, or promote the feeling of fullness. For higher levels of obesity surgical and nonsurgical procedures may be used. Nonsurgical or cosmetic fat reduction is not intended for weight loss, but to reduce stubborn fat pockets. Surgical weight loss works by one of 3 mechanisms: 1. restricting the amount of food you can eat, 2. limiting absorption of calories, or 3. combined restriction and limiting absorption.
