Special Episode Part 2: Perspective problems – stress, hardship, and heartbreak. Turning trauma and tragedy into triumph.

Sean Bannister Season 1 Episode 9

What causes a person to harden and thrive during a stressful encounter while another person softens and folds under the same circumstances? It’s all about what the person is made of and we’ll explore this further in part 2 of a 2-part special episode. Negative stress is not harmless and is now recognized as modifiable risk factor for heart disease so we must be serious about dealing with it.

Some of you suffer from perspective, or point of view problems gained from life’s experiences that make you more stress resilient or resistant to its negative effects. The good news is that you don’t need a rough upbringing or harsh environments to develop a perspective problem. American psychologist Albert Ellis developed a model that teaches us if we assign low emotional value to stressful events then our resulting stress will be lowered or potentially nonexistent. Routines and time management are also integral parts in an effective stress reduction strategy. Being efficient and allocating adequate time to complete tasks reduces the urge to rush and resulting elevated levels of stress.

When I dig deeper into stress management there are 2 major techniques you can apply. First, you have mitigation techniques that are preemptive approaches meant to reduce the likelihood of stress or the degree to which you experience it. Second, you have coping techniques that are reactionary approaches used to deal with stress that has been experienced.

I’ve developed stress mitigation and coping approaches that can be applied to prevent and reduce the effects of stress. The REESES Approach captures common stress mitigation techniques you can use that include R – reducing complexity and keeping things simple, E – exercising, E – eating and sleeping properly, S – sense of humor, E – emotional maturity, and S – surrounding yourself with positive people. The CREAM Approach captures common stress coping techniques that include C – calming your mind, R – relaxation techniques, E – exercise, A – avoiding the excesses, and M – music.

The professionally beautiful give us insight to the commitment we need to make in our own health. We’ll identify a celebrity who fits the bill.
